You may know by now that I’m a big fan of WordPress. I spend almost all of my paid hours working in wordpress, photoshop and other applications on my macintosh. I was approached by a client who currently has a wordpress website that is beyond UGLY and underperforming. I was thinking of downloading the entire website and using MAMP to locally host it and make it work. But then I started to think… why isn’t there a plugin or a setting in wordpress that essentially sets up and dual website that can be worked on graphically with a new theme.

I stumbled across a website called bits & babble who have a link to a plug-in called behind closed doors. I thought that was the trick until I kept reading and found out this isn’t what I’m looking for.  I need a way to keep the entire website running live and see/work on the new theme in the background without others seeing it. Then once I get the new theme looking right, I can “flip the switch” and presto, the “all new website” is up and running.

I have yet to find a solution to this problem other than downloading the entire website and running it locally on MAMP then uploading it when I want it to go live.

Having problems with MAMP? Do this.
